The Grant wRiting Incubator Program (GRIP)

Program Summary

The Grant wRiting Incubator Program (GRIP) was launched in September 2023 and is a longitudinal, mentored program supporting junior EM faculty who are preparing NIH proposals. Multi-modal feedback from senior faculty are through one-on-one meetings, small group discussions, and mock NIH study sections. GRIP takes place 3 times/year, aligning with general NIH submission cycles.

How does it work?

Junior faculty proposals are reviewed by senior NIH-funded faculty at least 3 times over a 6-month period prior to grant submission.

  • 6 months prior: Junior faculty meets one-on-one with senior faculty to discuss proposal ideas, scientific approaches, potential pitfalls

  • 2 months prior: Specific Aims page is intensively reviewed by one senior faculty member at a Research Division meeting, followed by group discussion with all EM research faculty

  • 1 month prior: Mock NIH study section is held with 2-3 external content experts providing both oral and written comments on the Research Strategy and Specific Aims
